History of Tattoos
Tattoos have a rich and varied history dating back thousands of years to the pyramids and beyond. Throughout time tattooing has had a deep tradition. Tattoos have always been a way of identifying people. Many cultures used tattoos to separate people by tribe, rank, or some other characteristic. At times tattoos were used as a way to get rid of illness and disease.
Most researchers agree that the earliest tattoos came from Egypt, during the time of the pyramids. Tattoos have different significance based on different cultures. Egyptians used tattoos to mark slaves. Polynesians used tattoos to identify a person’s tribe and their rank.
Many cultures used tattooing during religious ceremonies and rites of passage. As a young person crossed into adolescence, he or she may have been tattooed to shown their change of life.
The Polynesian culture had a very painful tattoo process. It is said that a shark’s tooth was used to pierce the skin and then ink put in the hole. Western civilization has come a little farther. Samuel O’Reily is credited with bringing the modern tattoo to the United States. He set up a shop in Chatham Square in New York City and used the first electric tattoo gun. This early model revolutionized the art of tattoos and set the standard for the tattoo guns used today.
Tattoos are becoming more popular and accepted in the mainstream of society as time goes on. The numbers vary but more than 1 person out of 15 has seriously considered getting a tattoo. Another important number is that 1 out of 4 people have some type of tattoo regret. When you make the decision to get a tattoo, you have to be very sure that you will still want that tattoo years down the road.
